Film Team Enlists Cross Ministry for Documentary
Bill Maher interviews Tim Wilkins
by Tim Wilkins
Though I had known for several weeks I was to be interviewed for an upcoming documentary, it was only twenty minutes before the actual interview that I learned the questions would be coming from Bill Maher.
Maher, probably best known for hosting "Politically Incorrect" which aired on the Comedy Central television network and later ABC, is currently the host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO. Maher began his career as a stand-up comedian--appearing on Johnny Carson and David Letterman's shows in 1982.
He has appeared in numerous films and on TV, guest-hosted Larry King Live on CNN, and on which he is a frequent guest. In 2003, he became the host of "Real Time" --a show similar to "Politically Incorrect." Maher told Terry Gross (on NPR's Fresh Air) in 2004 that he enjoys having more serious and well-informed guests on his current program. Whether Maher considers me "serious and well-informed" remains to be seen.
How did this come about?
Cross Ministry had been contacted by a Field Director for a production
company in Los Angeles. We learned this production company was filming for
a documentary which would show how religious groups view certain societal
issues—homosexuality being one of them.
After a series of questions, I decided to be interviewed for the
documentary. Arriving at the designated location, I noted many men and
women wearing conspicuous ear plugs and began to realize this interview
might be more than your "usual" interview. While having an inconspicuous
mic placed on me, film crew tossed questions my way--getting an idea of what
kind of guest I would be.
It was during this time I learned that Bill Maher would be conducting the
interview. Ushered down a hallway, the entourage assigned to me was
simultaneously talking and listening with their mics and ear plugs. I was
told "let's stop here; Bill wants to get film of your coming into the room."
We waited a moment and then I was told to "go around the corner and into
room 116." My entourage left me as I walked on. I opened the door to room
116 and was met with two cameras, one in my face, several technicians,
another guest and there sat Bill Maher. I energetically called out "Bill
Maher, good to see ya!" I instinctively smiled, shook hands with Maher and
the other guest who happens to be an acquaintance of mine.
The Interview
Even before I sat down, I set the stage by saying "though I am no longer
gay, I'm the happiest I've ever been and I owe that to Jesus Christ." For
the next 90 minutes, Maher peppered me with questions. Maher quoted me so
well as he formed questions, I told him "you certainly have done your
homework" with a wide smile.
Maher, known for his irreverent and comedic style, asked why homosexuality is seen in the animal kingdom if it was not 'normal'? I played along with the humor by responding "you know, immediately after praying mantises mate, the female bites off the head of the male, and then eats him. Are you suggesting that wives model praying mantises?" Maher laughed heartily!
The other guest was Justin, who I have known for several years. Justin
spoke from a gay-affirming position and while I disagreed with much he said
I was polite and respectful the entire time.
What's Next?
I was told the film team had recently returned from the Holy Land where
Maher interviewed scores of persons. The documentary team hopes to complete
filming soon and begin the editing process.
I am unsure how they plan to market this documentary; I overheard comments
about "independent film festivals" and "as a major film". Since Maher's
current show is on HBO, I would not be surprised if the finished film does
not show-up there.
I will keep you posted.
